布袋蓮 Eichhornia crassipes
(俗稱水葫蘆Water Hyacinth)
布袋蓮 Eichhornia crassipes 原生於亞馬遜盆地(Amazon basin)。
…Inflated leaf stems keep the plant free-floating, it’s fine roots often dangling 1 metre (3 feet) or more, while above the surface it’s glossy leaves, leathery and rounded, acted as sails to propel the whole plant through the water. Each posy of lavender-colored flowers has a distinctive blue-bordered yellow blotch on the top petal, a nectar guide for bees, who also seem to enjoy the secretions from microscopically beautiful glass-like hairs apparently positioned for their benefit. 布袋蓮膨脹的葉狀莖讓它可以自由浮在水上。
它的根往下漂在水𥚃長達一米甚至更深，水面上的光滑革質的圓葉像帆一樣，隨風在水中移動。
每株紫色的花束上的每朶小花最上方的花瓣，都會有內黃外藍的獨特斑點，吸引蜜蜂前來採蜜，上面精心為蜜蜂排列像玻璃一樣透明的毛所分沁的物質，似乎也深受蜜蜂的喜愛。
利用走莖(runners)，布袋蓮側生的萌檗(side shoots)，可以迅速複製繁殖……

布袋蓮離開原生地，沒有了天敵，變成成長迅速的入侵植物。加上化肥的溢出，為布袋蓮的生長火上加油，往往佔據了湖泊，難以清理。
布袋蓮的天敵是一種叫Brazilian Neochetina 的象鼻蟲(weevils)，俗稱布袋蓮象鼻蟲hyacinth weevil，但是引進這種天敵來防治緩不濟急。
那麼怎麼辦呢？
利用布袋蓮高碳氮含量的特性，可以用來產生生質的能源。
布袋蓮的生質能應用主要為製造沼氣作為燃料，肯亞等地已成功利用布袋蓮與動物糞便混合，產生可供烹飪或取暖的生物沼氣，這不僅能處理水患問題，也提供當地居民替代木炭的乾淨能源。同時，布袋蓮的高碳氮比特性，也使其在研究中顯示出成為生質塑膠等其他生質材料的潛力。 (~Google)
布袋蓮也可以製成可以自行分解的塑膠袋，為生態盡一分力。
