薑 Zingiber officinale
(薑 俗名Ginger )
薑屬(Zingiber)之下共有約150種植物。我們一般比較熟知的是薑(Zingiber officinale)，亦稱生薑。
「它的名字源自“Zingiber”，在梵文中意為“角狀的”，其莖幹是從粗壯、扭曲的塊莖狀地下莖裏冒出來的。在商貿往來中，這些植物被稱為“手”，因為它們很像是得了關節炎的浮腫手指。……(中略)……薑原產自中國南方的事實恰好解釋了它在廣東料理中發揮重要作用的原因。想想廣東人在為蒸/燉鷄或魚調味、煮西洋菜湯、炒牛肉時都會用薑搭配八角茴香作為香料的做法就知道。」*

很多薑屬的植物都有膨大的地下莖，或根狀莖(rhizomes)，具有引人的香味，常用來作為加味的調料或香料。薑也用於傳統的療法上……
In plant names, the Latin officinale means ‘of the storeroom’, referring to the place in a monastery where medicines were kept. In some medical traditions ginger is regarded almost as a panacea. Its ability to alleviate queasiness, pain, indigestion and the symptoms of common colds does appear to be supported by clinical evidence……**
薑的小種名officinale，在拉丁文中是「儲藏室的」的意思，指修道院中儲存藥品的地方。傳統療法廣泛使用薑，用來舒解反胃、疼痛、消化不良、去驅風寒……(薑的小種名，意指「儲藏室內的藥」)
讀後
盤點於過去幾年在台灣觀察過的薑科的植物，有6種是月桃屬Alpinia的：
烏來月桃 (大輪月桃) Alpinia uraiensis
普來氏月桃 Alpinia pricei
山薑(日本月桃) Alpinia japonica
月桃 Alpinia zerumbet
山月桃 Alpinia intermedia Gagnep
有1種是野薑花屬Hedychium：
穗花山奈(野薑花) Hedychium coronarium
有1種是薑黃屬Curcuma的：
薑黃(秋薑黃) Curcuma longa
有1種是薑屬Zingiber的：
多穗薑(三奈) Zingiber pleiostachyum
薑屬植物，只觀察過1種，而其中和我們日常生活最親近的薑(Zingiber officinale)卻付之厥如，要好好檢討了。
