露兜樹屬(林投屬) Pandanus spp.
The 650 Pandanus species of tropical Africa, South East Asia, and Oceania typically grow in humid coastal area, on islands and on coral atolls. Every bit as important in the Pacific islands as the coconut, they provide food, fiber, building materials, medicines, and shelter; they prevent coastal erosion and are planted to create windbreaks and to mark boundaries between properties. Often with prop roots—a skirt of sturdy stilts around the base—they are reminiscent of mangroves, although unrelated. The common name ‘screw pine’ derived from the spiral arrangement of leaves and the huge pineapple-shaped fruit of some species. Their tough, fibre leaves are sword-shaped, with sharply toothed edges; in New Caledonia, crows have learned to strip off barbed sections to use as tools for probing crevices and hooking insects larvae—the most complex known non-human use of foraging tools anywhere in the world.
露兜樹屬(林投屬)的植物，長在潮濕的海岸。和椰子對太平洋諸島嶼的影響一樣，它非常有用，提供了食物、纖維、建材、藥品，也用來遮風避雨。它防護海岸避免侵蝕，可作防風林，種來當作土地的界線。它裙狀的強壯支柱根，有若紅樹林。英文俗名「screw pine」就是源自它螺旋排列的葉片和某些品種有巨大的鳯梨型果實。它們革質的纖維葉是長劍型，呈現銳鋸齒緣。
在新喀里多尼亞島的烏鴉，居然會撕下林投葉有刺的那一邊作為工具，伸入縫隙中去鉤昆蟲的幼蟲……

在吉里巴斯，有一種叫Pandanus tectorius 的林投，果實內側是甜的，有橘子和芒果的味道，富含維生素A和C，是當地人的點心食物。
在東南亞，有種叫Pandanus amaryllifolius 的林投，是利用它發出類似草發酵的味道。泰國人用林投葉編成小籃子放入稻米來蒸，那種味道就跑進去了。它也使得林投戚風蛋糕(pandan chiffon cake)呈現不可思議的亮綠色調。
在巴布亞新幾內亞，Pandanus conoideus 是可以食用的，聚合果紅色魚雷狀，和男人的大腿一般長。切開用葉子包覆烤熟，油油的果心加水用手揉製將種子分開，就得到香濃的果肉醬，可做為烹煮食物的調料。
新幾內亞另外一種叫Pandanus julianettii 的林投，它的小核果有中指那麼長，富含油脂和蛋白質，以前當地人會隨著林投的成熟而遷徒前往覓食。為了安撫新的林投林的惡靈，他們還發展了一套約一千字的語言來進行溝通，避開講或暗示林投聚合果不好的字眼，譬如：水水的(waterlines)、味道不好、(果)肉質不佳等等。
The genus pandanus, largely unknown elsewhere, is embedded in the culture and lives of the people of Oceania. Perhaps most significant of all, sails of plaited pandanus leaves propelled the sea-going canoes of early voyagers who explored and populated the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
露兜樹屬(林投屬)的植物，在大部分其他地方可能不為所知，但卻是大洋洲各民族的生活和文化的一部分。獨木舟藉林投葉編成的風帆來航行，讓早期的旅人向外探索，後代在太平洋盆地開枝散葉，或許這是林投樹最大的貢獻呢！
讀後
在台灣我見過兩種林投：
1. 露兜樹 (林投) 學名是Pandanus odoratissimus，在海邊常見，往往密密長在一起，令其他的生物沒有什麼成長的空間。聚合果像頭那麼大，熟黃像鳯梨，但比較圓。
2. 山露兜(山林投) Freycinetia formosana ，聚合果比林投小，而且呈現長型。
據說林投的小核果甜甜的，可以吃。但我的印象只剩下是蠻硬的。小時候將小核果剝下來，從底部插入細長的竹子，是拿來甩當打仗遊戲童玩的。
林投姐在一棵林投上吊自殺，化成厲鬼，是小時候大人拿來嚇小孩的故事。使得林投林有了惡靈的盛名。在夜黑風高的晚上經過，最為有感。而不小心被林投葉割傷了，那種錐心之痛，是久久不去的記憶。
林投也有好的意頭。
林投樹耐火燒，縱使枝葉燒掉了，樹心都還活著。所以閩南語的歇後語「火燒林投」，比喻縱使受到各種打擊，內心意還是很執著，並不放棄的意思。(火燒林投Hué sio nâ-tâu——袂死心bē sí-sim)。
林投的聚合果上的核果，能耐海水浸泡，所以可以隨著海潮散佈到各個島嶼，以及大陸塊靠海的地方。在海邊看到的林投，如果說它們的先祖來自數千里之外陌生的地方，也不用感到訝異。不然，全世界的林投，怎麼能特化為650個不同的種呢？
