I knew that, because I had seen the enormous rivers carry with them sand and gravel through deep canyons. From up here, you could not see that the eternal snow was melting, that the glaciers were thawing at an ever-quickening rate. But I had seen it. And down there in the valleys, I had seen new roads twisting like lindworms of black asphalt with modernity riding on their backs. I had seen it. I had seen the migration, and mobile phones light up with the same alluring, harsh glow on dark evenings in Himalayan villages as everywhere else where young people meet. Everything is changing, always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The small is swallowed by the big; small kingdoms disappear. Cutoff valleys are opened, and the world floods in, here as anywhere else. And in those valleys, the interests of one global empire clash with the interests of another, and what happens then to the people who live along the valley floor? I had seen repression and a desire for freedom, pessimism and optimism, religious oppression and deep devotion, intolerance and enlightenment, exasperation and ecstasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The many, many small lives in among the towering mountains. Nor could you see the slow growth and erosion of the mountains or the endlessly slow movements of the tectonic plates as they collide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erika\u5728\u7d93\u904ePassu Glacier\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u89c0\u5bdf\u5230\u51b0\u5ddd\u52a0\u901f\u878d\u5316\u7684\u72c0\u6cc1\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Torrents of meltwater ran off the glacier and into the new lake. Passu Glacier is shrinking by about four metres a month, and is melting with ever increasing speed. The glaciers of Karakoram, the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush are often called “the world’s third pole”. There are, in all, fifty-four thousand glaciers in this mountain region and nowhere does the ice lie as packed as Karakoram; with the exception of the poles, Karakoram has the highest density of glaciers in the world. In Pakistan alone, there are more than seven thousand glaciers, and about three-quarters of the country’s water reserves are stored in the ice. The Himalayas, “abode of the snow”, are also the home of ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u51b0\u5ddd\u878d\u89e3\u7522\u751f\u7684\u6c34\u6d41\u9032\u5165\u65b0\u5f62\u6210\u7684\u6e56\u6cca\u3002Passu Glacier \u4ee5\u6bcf\u500b\u67084\u516c\u5c3a\u7684\u901f\u5ea6\u5728\u5012\u9000\uff0c\u878d\u89e3\u7684\u901f\u5ea6\u4e0d\u65b7\u52a0\u5feb\u3002\u5580\u5587\u5d11\u5d19\u5c71\u8108\u3001\u8208\u90fd\u5eab\u4ec0\u5c71\u8108\u548c\u559c\u99ac\u62c9\u96c5\u5c71\u8108\u4e0a\u9762\u7684\u51b0\u5ddd\uff0c\u88ab\u7a31\u70ba\u300c\u4e16\u754c\u7b2c\u4e09\u6975\u300d\u3002\u90a3\u5152\u7684\u5c71\u5340\u5171\u67095\u842c4\u5343\u689d\u51b0\u5ddd\uff0c\u5728\u4e16\u754c\u5404\u5730\u518d\u4e5f\u6c92\u6709\u5176\u4ed6\u5730\u65b9\u51b0\u5ddd\u7684\u5bc6\u5ea6\u8d85\u904e\u5580\u5587\u5d11\u5d19\u5c71\u8108\u4e86\u3002\u55ae\u55ae\u5728\u5df4\u57fa\u65af\u5766\u5883\u5167\uff0c\u5c31\u8d85\u904e7 \u5343\u689d\u51b0\u5ddd\uff0c\u90a3\u500b\u570b\u5bb6\u56db\u5206\u4e4b\u4e09\u7684\u6c34\u662f\u5132\u5b58\u5728\u90a3\u4e9b\u51b0\u5c64\ud855\ude83\u9762\u3002\u81f3\u65bc\u559c\u99ac\u62c9\u96c5\u5c71\u8108\uff0c\u53eb\u505a\u300c\u96ea\u9109\u300d\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u51b0\u7684\u4f4f\u6240\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or rather, once were. Most of the glaciers are now melting at record speed. An average of eight billion tons of ice melts every year, and that does not include all the tons that are replaced by new snow. The process is self-reinforcing and therefore speeds up each year. It is highly likely that two-thirds of the glaciers will have melted by the end of the century. These glaciers supply the biggest and most important rivers in Asia with water, including the Indus, Ganges and Mekong, so the consequences of this will be catastrophic. Not only will anyone who lives in the mountain region – about a quarter of a billion people – run out of water, but anyone who relies on water from these rivers will suffer as a result: in other words, more than one and a half billion people. But the water shortage will not be the only consequence of these drastic changes to the eco system; there will also be an increased risk of landslides and flooding. Even though the volume of water may remain constant, the water supply will be more erratic: drought followed by flooding, which is then followed by drought again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u6642\u904e\u5883\u9077\uff0c\u73fe\u5728\u5df2\u7d93\u4e0d\u662f\u5982\u6b64\u3002\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u7684\u51b0\u5ddd\u73fe\u5728\u6b63\u4ee5\u6709\u53f2\u4ee5\u4f86\u6700\u5feb\u901f\u7684\u901f\u5ea6\u5728\u878d\u89e3\u3002\u6bcf\u5e74\u5e73\u5747\u670980\u5104\u5678\u7684\u51b0\u878d\u89e3\uff0c\u4e0d\u5305\u62ec\u65b0\u96ea\u878d\u89e3\u7684\u6c34\u3002\u6bcf\u5e74\u878d\u89e3\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u53c8\u6703\u9032\u4e00\u6b65\u81ea\u6211\u52a0\u5feb\u878d\u89e3\u7684\u901f\u5ea6\u3002\u975e\u5e38\u53ef\u80fd\u4e09\u5206\u4e4b\u4e8c\u7684\u51b0\u5ddd\u6703\u5728\u9019\u500b\u4e16\u7d00\u7d50\u675f\u524d\u878d\u89e3\u5149\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u51b0\u5ddd\u4f9b\u7d66\u4e9e\u6d32\u4e3b\u8981\u6cb3\u6d41\u6240\u9700\u7684\u6c34\uff0c\u5305\u62ec\u6046\u6cb3\u548c\u6e44\u516c\u6cb3\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u7f3a\u6c34\u7684\u5f8c\u679c\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u707d\u96e3\u3002\u4e0d\u53ea\u4f4f\u5728\u5c71\u5340\u4f54\u5168\u4e16\u754c2.5\u5104\u7684\u4eba\u53e3\u7121\u6c34\u53ef\u7528\uff0c\u4efb\u4f55\u4ef0\u8cf4\u9019\u4e9b\u6cb3\u6c34\u7684\u4eba\u4e5f\u6703\u5690\u5230\u82e6\u679c\uff1b\u63db\u53e5\u8a71\u8aaa\uff0c\u90a3\u6703\u5f71\u97ff\u523015\u5104\u4eba\u3002\u4f46\u662f\uff0c\u7f3a\u6c34\u4e0d\u662f\u751f\u614b\u7cfb\u5287\u8b8a\u7684\u552f\u4e00\u5f8c\u679c\uff1b\u571f\u77f3\u6d41\u548c\u6df9\u6c34\u7684\u98a8\u96aa\u4e5f\u6703\u589e\u52a0\u3002\u7e31\u4f7f\u6c34\u7684\u7e3d\u91cf\u7dad\u6301\u4e00\u6a23\uff0c\u6c34\u7684\u4f9b\u7d66\u91cf\u5c07\u66f4\u4e0d\u53ef\u6e2c\uff0c\u5927\u65f1\u4e4b\u5f8c\u662f\u5927\u6f87\uff0c\u5927\u6f87\u4e4b\u5f8c\u6709\u5927\u65f1\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, it will be even more dangerous than it already is to live in the mountains and on the banks of these great waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our texts are different and our ceremonies are also different. Practitioners of Bon believe that the world is influenced by dark and light forces, and we try to balance those forces. Like the Buddhists, we believe in karma, reincarnation and enlightenment, but our traditions are older. As Lugu Lake has been so isolated – there was no road here until the 1980s – the Bon traditions have been preserved better here than in Tibet.
