After years in which Arif took the world by storm, as Bill Gates entrusted him with money and Warren Buffett and other billionaires welcomed him into their exclusive club of rich philanthropists, he stood accused of swindling investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars, breaking laws and offering bribes, all to keep his billionaire lifestyle afloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stolen cash propped up Abraaj in what the famed Bernard Madoff investigator Harry Markopolos described to us as a Ponzi scheme with leverage. Abraaj had become one of the largest corporate frauds in history, and Arif, accused of wrongfully holding on to $385 million of the funds he had taken, faced 291 years in a high-security jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it becomes ever more fashionable for billionaires and CEOs to pledge to do good and start foundations, join Interpol and United Nations boards and team up with governments, universities, and schools to fulfill grand plans, it’s worth remembering that there’s already a system in place to fairly and justly manage human affairs in a way that values everyone equally, regardless of how much money they have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Billionaires and CEOs usually have their own agendas. They have successfully lobbied governments to reduce taxes, and claiming that they can do a better job than governments is in part an argument to keep taxes low. The U.S. corporate tax rate has halved since the 1950s, and some countries struggle to raise much tax at all less than<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 percent of Pakistan’s 216 million citizens paid income tax in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our private pensions and state pensions are flowing into the $4 trillion private equity industry, where the money is used to buy companies all around the world, from New York and London to Istanbul, Accra, and Karachi. Private equity is an industry that enjoys more secrecy than it deserves. If accountants and regulators can’t keep private equity firms on the right track then more people are going to have to take an interest in how they operate and whether they stick to their promises\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abraaj’s healthcare fund was taken over by TPG. The American private equity firm also hired John Kerry as an adviser. But TPG has encountered problems of its own. Like Arif, Bill McGlashan, who cofounded TPG’s Rise impact-investing fund with U2’s Bono and Jeff Skoll, was a star of the finance industry. And like Kito, Bill picked London’s Connaught Hotel for a meeting with us in January 2019 to talk about his work assisting poor people who lived far from the luxurious Mayfair venue. Bill was briefly in London when he met us, on his way to Davos, where he gave a talk with Bono. A few weeks later, Bill was arrested in the U.S. college admissions scandal. The Department of Justice accused him of bribing officials to get his son into the University of Southern California, forcing him to leave TPG. Another impact-investing star was in trouble with the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
